About the Book:

Usually Clem would dread the idea of spending an entire summer sailing with her family—two parents, one annoying little sister, and no internet, all on one tiny boat; however, right now escaping her life on land sounds pretty good. Clem did something bad during her sophomore year, even though she didn’t mean to. She fell for her best friend’s boyfriend and thought that he was falling for her too. Now the school year is over, the truth is out and he’s been excused while she’s been exiled, leaving her with no friends and zero social life.

When she and her family set sail the last thing Clem is looking for is another romance, but perhaps it found her anyway. His name is James. He’s cute, funny, and best of all, doesn’t know anything about her past. He and his dad are sailing the same route as Clem and her family for the summer and he’s just the distraction Clem needs. Can he break down Clem’s walls and unbreak her broken heart?

Check out our Exclusive Interview with the Author here:

1) If you could have dinner with one of your characters who would it be?

The little sister, Olive, stole all of her scenes, I thought. Initially I didn’t plan to include her much but she kept popping up! I would love to have dinner with her. She cracks me up.

2) The James character in your book is very dreamy. I fell just a little bit in love when I read it. Is he inspired by anyone you know?

I actually did keep a photo on my desktop of a hot redhead I know (a friend’s brother) to inspire James. The photo has such an easy smile, a summer feel, and I could just create the character based on that one image. I kind of loved him too.

3) As writers, we all love to procrastinate. What’s your favorite procrastination activity?

Twitter! (@melissacwalker). It’s SUCH a rabbit hole for me–I can be on it for hours clicking on everyone’s links and eavesdropping on conversations and talking to people.

4) Which came first, the title or the novel?

The novel! It was called “The Boat Book” in my original drafts, so you see why we had to change it. Actually, another writer came up with the title, and though, yes, I know the song, I just love the sentiment and it fit so well!

5) What are you working on next?

I have a letter in DEAR TEEN ME, an anthology of YA authors writing letters to their teen selves, which is out in late October. And I’ve got another book in the works for 2013, but I’m keeping mum for now.
