Exclusive Interview with the Author!
1) If Oprah invited you onto her show to talk about your book, what would the theme of the show be?
Secrets! When do you tell? And why. DRIVE TIME is all about secrets. As a reporter, Charlie McNally is used to keeping things confidential of course, that's how successful reporters get the groundbreaking stories. But suddenly it feels like everyone as a secret. And maybe--that's not a good thing.
Oprah and I could chat about--when happens when someone says: I'll tell you something but you have to promise never to tell anyone else. Would you ever tell? And does your significant other count as someone else?
And what if the love of your life asks ''can you keep a secret? You can, of course but what if you decide its not really in everyone's best interest to do so? Is your loyalty to your loved one? Or is there a larger loyalty?
And have you ever revealed a secret that you regret? Or have you ever NOT told--and wished you had?
And really, Oprah and I could have another conversation--DRIVE TIME is all about a nefarious scheme involving recalled cars! With the massive Toyota recall right now--turns out DRIVE TIME is absolutely ripped from the headlines.
2) What kind of research did you have to do to bring this story to life on the page?
As a TV reporter for the past 30 years, I've wired myself with hidden cameras, confronted corrupt politicians and chased down criminals. So there's a big element of been-there done-that in all the Charlotte McNally books. We've done lots of stories about car recalls--the pitfalls and the dangers, and what can happen that allows people to be driving dangerous cars. I mean--look what's happening right now!
So I know the inside scoop on how recalls work--and what may be wrong with your car at the very moment, and why you may not know it-- and all that comes in to play in DRIVE TIME.
Plus my husband is an attorney and knows lots of secrets. I'm a reporter, and I have secrets of my own. When do you tell? How do two strong people make a happy marriage when there are so many secrets? Charlie McNally is trying to figure that out.
3) When did you first know that you wanted to be a writer? Have you had other jobs along the way?
Laughing! Yes, I wanted to be a mystery author since I read my first Nancy Drew. (I probably thought I could do it better, knowing me as a kid...) But I worked as a proofreader for a publishing company (reading the entire Indiana Code of Laws out loud, yikes!) as an ice-cream-cone maker at the Dairy Queen (yes, I can make the curl on the op) sold records (remember?) at a record store in Indianapolis. I've worked as a legislative assistant in the US Senate, and as a staffer at Rolling Stone Magazine. I started my career in radio, and then moved to telelvision as a reporter in 1975. (Yes, yikes.)
So since then, I've been writing news stories everyday. As a journalist, though, you can't make stuff up. So this fiction thing is a new adventure!
4) Which fictional character do you have a secret crush on?
Henry V. Yes, truly. Although he's not fictional, I had a mad crush on him form reading Shakespeare's Henry IV part 2, and then Henry V. I literally used to dream about him. Smart, handsome, strong, wise (he grew to be so, at least. A bit of a bad boy. And then all those crown jewels...
5) Since becoming a writer, what’s the most exciting thing to ever happen to you?
Winning the Agatha for best first mystery, certainly. I still get goosebumps looking at the ceramic teapot the winner receives. And my two RITA nominations!
But also? The other day I was in the post office, and a women looked at me and said--aren't you Hank Phillippi Ryan? As a TV reporter, I'm used to being recognized, so I said, sure. And she opened her purse and pulled out my book FACE TIME. She said--I'm reading your book right now, and I love it! Will you sign it for me?
So she hadn't known me from TV--it was from my books. And that was spectacular.
6) If you could choose one dessert or snack food that you could eat as much as you want of (and never gain an ounce!) what would it be?
Twizzlers. No, fresh French bread with sweet butter. No, pizza. No, tacos with avocados and salsa and sour cream. OH, this is too difficult.
